Greg Colson
New works
13 December – 2 February 2002
Sprovieri is pleased to present Greg Colson’s first solo exhibition in the UK.
In his series of constructed pi charts, Greg Colson plays up the material and visual elements to interfere with the intended meaning of the information. The pi charts, with their structural tidiness and uneven finish, illustrate to the viewer a parody of the way in which the American public aspires to order and understanding; their physical presence contradicts this intangible universe, made of an endless stream of analyses coming from the non-material setting of computer screens or corporate printed reports.
Greg Colson draws a parallel between the intentional and accidental dynamics which rule our lives in the “intersections” pieces where the streets represented as road signs meet at an imaginary junction, or in the “stadium” pieces where the organized structure of a stadium imposes an order over a crowd of people.
Greg Colson was born in Seattle in 1956. He lives and works in Los Angeles. His works are included in various collections such as the MOCA Los Angeles, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C. and the Panza Collection.
In the past year, he has held one person exhibitions at Sperone Westwater (New York), Galleria Cardi (Milan) and Griffin Contemporary (Los Angeles).
