Cinthia Marcelle

Cinthia Marcelle lives and works in São Paulo, Brazil, and graduated in Fine Arts from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, in 1999.

Marcelle uses video and photography to document the effects that her interventions have on the usual order of things. Particularly, Marcelle’s work is inspired by the chaos and turmoil of possibilities which can be found in everyday life. She tries to gain a distance from this chaos and reorganise the disorder formally. Her actions create situations that challenge our notions of conventional behaviour by introducing humorous coincidences and connections.

Selected solo exhibitions include: beginning, middle, beginning, Serralves Museum, Porto (2025–26); A Conjunction of Factors, MACBA, Barcelona (2022–23); By Means of Doubt, MASP, São Paulo (2022–23); The Family in Disorder: Truth or Dare, Modern Art Oxford (2018); and Projects 105: Cinthia Marcelle, MoMA PS1, New York (2016–17).

Selected group exhibitions and biennial participations include: If the word we, 59th Carnegie International, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh (2026–27); For the Time Being, 6th Kochi-Muziris Biennale, India (2025–26); Nebula, Complesso dell’Ospedaletto, Venice (2024); 10th Berlin Biennale (2018); the 57th Venice Biennale, where she represented Brazil, which received a Special Mention for National Participation (2017); Sharjah Biennial 12 (2015); New Museum Triennial, New York (2012); and the 29th São Paulo Biennial (2010).

Her work is currently on view at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, as part of If the word we, 59th Carnegie International, until 3 January 2027.
