The work Nau (Nau is the Portuguese word for ship), alludes to the ancient ships which set off from Portugal on a trip to South America and finally discovered what we now call Brazil. The twelve framed photographs show the mast of a replica of a 'Nau do Descobrimento', together with the elevated raod that borders Guanabara Bay. All the photographs were taken with a cell phone and reveal unexpected similarities to the formal conventions of historical maritime etchings and paintings of Rio. The artist creates also an additional juxtaposition of a modern construction (Rio's highway) with a colonial vessel, in so doing he manages to weave together images of the past and present posing the question of Rio's future.
