The translucent layer of sicofoli sharpens the sensation of three-dimensionality absorbing the viewer into a transitory space of in-between territories. Using plastic conceived primarily for commercial packaging, this material reflects the technical progress at a time of accelerated industrial growth, particularly in Italy. The transparency echoes the artist's awareness of spatial and social borders, as she reduces them to merely provisional demarcation. Carla Accardi redefines the role of women in the public and domestic environment. Bold not only for its technical innovation, the material shows a fearless and simultaneously subtle and elegant attempt to critically address conventional gender roles.Provenance
