Throughout his career he returned to a small group of everyday objects and used them to investigate visual relationships within the composition. His works are restrained and carefully constructed with close attention to the placement of forms and the spaces between them. By reducing surface detail and using subdued colour he shifted attention away from the identity of individual objects and toward their visual presence. Repetition became central to this process because each new arrangement allowed subtle changes in light and proportion to transform the composition. Over time his work moved away from early Cubist and Metaphysical influences toward an increasingly simplified approach in which recognizable objects were treated with a strong emphasis on formal structure.Provenance
