In Untitled (1959), created shortly before Jannis Kounellis’ Alfabeti series, the artist explores the space between presence and absence, where drawing, writing and image begin to merge. The work captures what Kounellis described as a “Charontian” moment, transforming elements of the port of Piraeus, such as piers and cranes, into abstract letters and signs.
