"Yes, I am a painter.
I have always seen myself as one; I have always known it.
Even my three-dimensional works – whether sculptures suspended on walls or occupying the floor of a church in Venice – take the form they do because I am a painter, remaining in dialogue with the questions raised by painting. I began this way, and throughout my life it has always been so. I look at the world as a painter, I feel as a painter, I think as a painter.
'Les Trois Grâces', a sculpture I created in 2022 for the Tuileries/Louvre, once again brought the question of the human body into my work. The human body, as we know, is the measure of everything: the vastness of the horizon, the height of a mountain, the breadth of a river.
In its chaotic brutality, 'Field', a sculpture I made in 2022 for the Chiesa di San Fantin in Venice, also speaks of the denial of what it means to be human, echoing the horrors of war and the violence of pain.
The 'XIV Steps' paintings carry the echoes of the unavoidable murmurs of an ancient history, while at the same time reaching us as a contemporary cry of refusal against the perpetuation of violence and oppression, and the annihilation of hope.
Painting is—and will always remain—capable of expressing precisely this."
